On the Thursday, August 30th, 2007 broadcast of the Late Show with David Letterman, Dave was in the audience for what appeared to me to be the infamous, “Stupid Human Tricks.” He called a name when I tuned in, and a man in shorts close to the isle rose. In the usual small talk chit-chat before each little showtime, Dave asked the man what he does. He said he’s a scientist. Dave seemed to be thrilled, a little bit more than usual showbiz thrilled. He shook the man’s hand and said, “Wow, I don’t believe I’ve ever met a scientist.” And they talked about it a bit. The man said he works at North Carolina, etc. but that’s all kind of moot in the light of Dave’s confession.
David Letterman has been one of the highest profile media figures for a generation, and, whether it’s true or not, said that may be the first time he’s ever met a scientist. Perhaps if something had happened to where he felt he had met one earlier, maybe more of us would feel like we have met one ever. I feel like I’ve met Biff Henderson, Mujibur and Sirajul, and a huge assortment of actors, actresses, models, and musicians because of his show, and judging by what passes as news these days, many others have as well.
That’s not a soapbox rant. That’s an observation.
